Bridges

There are various different types of bridge, but they are all designed to replace a missing tooth. They are bonded to a neighbouring tooth or teeth so are fixed in place.

A Maryland bridge is usually used on front teeth. It has a metal ‘wing’ that is bonded to the back of the tooth next to the gap. That wing supports the bridge tooth.

It is a fixed restoration so it needs extra care to clean well, but it isn't removable like a denture would be. It generally is bonded only to one tooth. (cantilevered).

A conventional bridge involves more drilling. The whole of the neighbouring tooth is covered with the retaining part of the bridge and the bridge tooth is supported by one tooth in the case of a two unit bridge, or by two teeth in a three unit bridge.

Two unit cantilever bridges are usually used for front teeth and three unit conventional bridges are usually used for back teeth due to different forces that the bridges undergo when chewing.
