Removing decay or a broken tooth or filling, and restoring with amalgam. Used less commonly now but can still be a very useful way of restoring teeth.

If there is decay in a tooth it is usually best to remove that decay to try and stabilise things. One way of restoring the tooth after the decay is removed is with a silver filling called amalgam.
Amalgam has been used for many years with a proven track record and is particularly forgiving in deep cavities where the edge of the filling will be below gum level.
It is being phased out but we really do not have a good alternative as yet.
