Also a lab made restoration for back teeth. They are a good option to strengthen teeth without removing as much tooth as a traditional crown preparation would. They sit on the top part of the tooth rather than cover the whole tooth.

Whereas a crown sits over the whole tooth (and therefore requires that all surfaces are reduced (drilled), an onlay requires much less tooth removal as it sits on top of the tooth.
It still provides strength but it preserves more tooth.
They are generally used on back teeth where the appearance is not so important as it is sometimes hard to hide the junction of the tooth and restoration.
