Many people suffer a degree of gum disease, but some people are more prone to issues than others.

The process of gum disease

If the gums get inflamed they tend to swell slightly. They become puffy and red and a pocket develops behind the gum between the gum and the tooth.

It's hard enough to keep healthy gums clean but once a pocket starts to form this becomes even harder. The soft plaque which contains lots of bacteria now has a hiding place in the pocket.

Chalky deposits (tartar) create a ledge which is a further obstacle to cleaning.

If plaque is left in contact with the tooth for any length of time then the gums will get more inflamed.

Sometimes this inflammation leads to loss of bone which holds the tooth in place. This can lead to the pocket getting deeper so that even more plaque can build up and cause even more inflammation.

Periodontal treatment

This involves measuring the extent of the gum disease, making the process of cleaning more effective by removing tartar and sometimes ledges around fillings or other obstacles and teaching you how to remove more plaque on a regular basis by brushing more effectively.

Unfortunately if you are prone to gum disease then you will have to fight harder than others to keep your gums healthy. More frequent cleaning appointments are often recommended.
