Posts and core
A post is placed when there is very little tooth left for the restoration to bond to. A core, is a filling that is placed to help retain a crown.

When teeth bite together they are put under tremendous forces.
If there is not sufficient tooth structure to help withstand these forces then sometimes a post can be placed in the root of the tooth. This then protrudes and gives something for the filling or crown to 'hang on to'.
A core may then be placed over the post followed by a crown to complete the restoration.
